In 2007, after facing state sponsored cyber-attacks, Estonian scientists were set a challenge: re-think data security by designing and a tagging system for electronic data which could prove the correctness of data, networks and processes without reliance on centralized trust authorities. Guardtime invented KSI Blockchain – a massively scalable alternative to PKI to replace human trust with digital truth.

In 2020, KSI became the first blockchain system to carry eIDAS accreditation – the EU trust mark for qualified trust services with legal power for electronic transactions in the European Single Market.
